Mother and Pavel

In chapter 7 Mother says 'thank you' to Pavel for treating Bruno after he falls off the swing. Why is this a turning point for Mother? What has changed for her at this point? How do you think Pavel's treatment of Bruno differs from the way Bruno's family treats Pavel?

  1. I beleve since that mother has seen what Pavel did to Bruno when he feel off the swing Mother is going to treat Pavel in a nicer and happier way.

  2. For quite a while now Mother has started to think differently about Pavel. Pavel helped Bruno after he fell off his pritty cool tyre swing and hurt himself. Mother and Pavel have kind of started a secret friendship without Father or Leutanant Kotler noticing because Pavel is a Jew.

  3. Because mother has heard such horrible things about the Jews that she doesn't believe her eyes about what she was seeing.Since mother has seen that she treats Pavel with respect and tyreats him as a human should be treated.

  4. Mother has finally started to think for herself. When she saw how Pavel helped her son,Bruno, she was very confused. Before this Father had only been saying nasty and mean things about the Jews. Now she sees a Jew showing kindness to her son. Things have changed for mother because she sees Jews in a different light now. Pavel was very gentle with Bruno. He helped him and was very kind to him. The family treats Pavel as if he is dirt under there feet. All he is to them is a waiter who serves them and helps in the kitchen.

  5. The Nazi party have being saying stuff out against the jews and when Mother sees that Pavel the cook who might be a jew has helped her son.She thanks him and relises that what the Nazis are saying is not true

  6. This is a turning point for Mother because she she is confused that Pavel was caring towards Bruno after he fell of the swing. It had made her think about changing her thoughts about the Jews a few kilometres away from her. I believe that Mother has become more careful.Mother is becoming nicer to the Jews, but i think Father is staying the same.

  7. Well Mother is really confused because Pavel has helped a German boy. Mother has been told that they are bad, mean and should'nt be alive.Mother might be about to change her mind about the Jews at that point of time. I don't think that it is fair that Pavel treats Bruno so nicely and then in return Bruno's family treats him like a sheep.

  8. This is a turning point for Mother because she has been told that Jews are horrible people and you should not be kind to them, but when she finds out that Bruno fell of the swing and Pavel had helped him and fixed him she realised that Jews are really not bad people and she got confused.

  9. It is a turning point for Mother because she had been told that Jews are bad, unpleasent and nasty. But when Mother found out that Pavel took the time to help Bruno and had treated Bruno's leg after he fell off his tyer swing. She was confused because she just found out that Pavel was a nice Jew and not what the Nazi's had been saying about the Jews so she said that if anyone asked about Bruno's leg, she had fixed Bruno's leg. I think it is different from the way bruno's family treat him because they treat him as if he is not equal but he treats Bruno with respect.

  10. Mother knows what father is doing to the Jews and if father found out that mother said, "thank you" to Pavel then mother can get in big trobble by father. I think this is a turning point because if Pavel didn't help Bruno after he fell from the swing then Bruno would just be their till someone came to help him. I think that mother only gets told that the Jews are only bad and aren't really proper Germans. Then when mother saw that Pavel helped Bruno now she thinks that maybe Jews arn't bad? Maybe everybody is just being crewl because of their religion? I think what has changed is that mother is starting to believe that Jews are just normal people like them not bad, crewl, non Germans like what everyone else is saying. I think Pavel treats Bruno and his family the way he would want to be treated himself. Pavel dosen't be crewl to the family because of what the family is doing to him. I think that Bruno and his family and the rest of Germany treat them bad because of there religion and not by the person they really are.

  11. In this situation mother would be confused because she thought that all jews are inhuman savages but now that this has happened she now is starting to belive that jews are not bad at all and that if father finds out there will be serious consequences.

  12. I think mother has now realised that what people are saying about the jews is not actually true. I think Bruno now realises that the way Pavel is treated is wrong.

  13. Mother is really confused because she dosen't think that a Jewish person can touch her son and this really changed her way of thinking about Jews. When Pavel talks to Bruno he is nice and kind like everything about Jews is wrong but when Bronos famaly talks to him, they treat him just like a slave.

  14. According to how Pavel treated Bruno when he fell off the swing, Mother wants to respect Pavel for he did and thank him. Mother also wanted to thank Pavel because she just recently found out that he was a Jew, but was nicer and happier than the other jews. Mother thinks that the Jew's religion is bad and Pavel is 'different.'

  15. In chapter 7 Mother say's thankyou to Pavel after he had helped Bruno when he had fallen off the swing he had made. This is a turning point for Mother because all this time Mother has been hearing bad things about the Jews and people saying that they are not real humans and that they are not true Germans. Mother at this point thinks that most of the Jews are not bad and that some of them are nice and not cruel at all. I think that Bruno's Family treats Pavel with no respect and that he is not equal to any of them, But on the other hand Pavel is a nice sweet Jew who cared about Bruno when he had fallen off the swing.

  16. This is turning piont for mother because she thought Jews were really bad people and you should not be friends with them. But because Bruno fell off the swing and Pavel helped him mother finally realised that Jews are not that bad, and that they should treat Pavel alot better.

  17. This was a turning point for mother because she beleved what her husband said and what Adolf Hitler said. Mother mind has changed at this point because she beleved what everyonelse beleved. It's a big differents betewene the way Pavel treats Bruno's family to the way Bruno's family treats Pavel

  18. Mother now realises that Pavel isnt what she thinks she is. Mother finds that Pavel is very friendly after helping Bruno when he fell off the swing. Mother then trys to treat him better.

  19. mother is starting to think diffrent about pavel after bruno fell off the swing when mother was not home and pavel gave bruno first aid. This will change the way bruno and mother treat pavel because he helped bruno when he fell off the swing.

  20. That was a turning point for mother because she beleved in her husband said and what Adolf Hitler said. But because Bruno fell off the swing and Pavel helped his mother, she finally realised that Jews are not that bad.

  21. The only things mother has heard about the Jews is that they are the worst kind of people and other mean things. But when Pavel,a Jew, helps Bruno, a German, she starts to think differently about Pavel and Jews. I think she is starting to think differently about Jews despite the possibility of being discovered as a German thinking Jews aren't bad. She knows what her husband is doing to Jews.

  22. Mother is starting to think for herself. When she herd all about what pavel did to her son bruno.

  23. When Bruno falls of the swing and Pavel(a Jew) helps him out mother says'thankyou'. Pavel technically is not allowed to touch bruno and or a German as the 'Fury' believe that Jews are causing all the problems in Germany. Although Bruno is a German and Pavel is a Jew mother is still greatful. This is a turning point for Mother because all she hears about Jews is 'they should not be treated like humans', or 'they are aliens not humans'. Although mother is told to believe this she is now starting to think for herself and realize 'are these people really as bad as i'm told?' Mother is now aware that not everyone has to think and act the same way as the 'Fury'.

  24. Saying thankyou to Pavel was a turning point for mother because she thought Jews were terrible alien like people who didnt deserve to live as Hitler and her husband told her. Mother is starting to think Jews are OK people who are quite nice, mother is starting to think for herself and decides to say thank you to Pavel because Pavel is a very nice person who had a very high potential. Maybe Jews can be good people mother thinks to her self silently, you cant tell anyone or something will happen and it wont be good if mother tells anyone so hush says mother

  25. I think mother has finally seen this situation with new eyes. She has begun to brake away from the probaganda which has blinded her. She knew what was happening at the camp as her husband was the comandant but until this "swing" incident she most likely believed that what her country was doing was for the greater good. Now she sees what is happening to theese poor, tortured people because of one act of kindness towards her son.

But Pavel on the other hand is suffering under the immense agony that the Nazis are inflicting on him and all the other Jews, gypsies, disabled, homosexual and various other enimies of the Nazis. The curious thing about Pavel is that he did not have to assist Bruno. He could have just pretended not to see Bruno and let him suffer. After all he is the son of the man in charge of the suffering of all the unfortunate people in the concentration camp.

  26. (continued) The way Bruno's family are treating Pavel I think is very diverse. For example before the "swing" incident Bruno never thought much of Pavel except that he was a good waiter and that he often looked frustrated or angry. After the "swing" incident Bruno became curious and confused about Pavel. How could a waiter be a doctor? Pavel lives on the other side of the fence so father's way of treating Pavel would most likely be the same way he treats the rest of the people on the other side of the fence. Mother however most likely treated Pavel not unlike father. But when Pavel helped Bruno(which he did at a great risk )mother began to lift the veil that had been placed on her.

  27. Father only tells Mother about the bad things about Jews but when Mother see's Bruno all fixed up because of Parvel and so mother is having second thoughts about Parvel. Parvel is a Jew and Bruno's Father treats jews really nasty. Parvel still treats him nicely. Parvel is a good man.

  28. Mother is starting to think that what she has been told about the Jews is a lie and that there not that bad.Because Pavel helped Bruno when he fell off the swing Mother is starting to think for herself and she thinks that there not that bad.Even though Bruno's family treats Pavel and all the Jews badly by killing them and punishing them for nothing he still has a kind heart to go and help Bruno, even though they treat Pavel extremely bad.

  29. I think it was very generous of Pavel to do that for Bruno and Bruno's mother now relises that Pavel is very very compasionet.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Mother has a lot of compassion for pavel

    ReplyDelete
  31. I reckon that Pavel and mother get along great because mother thinks of Pavel more than a Jew that needs to be killed but as a compasionet person.

    ReplyDelete
  32. It just isn't right the way father and lutenant cotler treat pavel because last chapter when pavel got bashed by lutenant cotler was just terrible and I think that mother kind of thinks that what father and hitler is doing is wrong
